Yoga is renowned for being a discipline, or ancient form of exercise that focuses on improving one's strength, flexibility and breathing with the aim of boosting both physical and mental well-being. In this day and age where every time you turn on the TV or click onto the internet we're being told to stay fit and healthy and maintain good exercise routines, yoga seems like a natural choice for many people. Even the NHS recognises it as a good form of exercise: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/guide-to-yoga/
When made part of a daily routine, yoga has numerous benefits including:
increased flexibility and improved balance
increased muscle strength and tone
improved respiration, energy and vitality
maintaining a balanced metabolism
weight reduction
cardio and circulatory health
improved athletic performance
protection from injury and falls
Yoga has also been known to improve chronic pain, headaches, carpal tunnel, lower blood pressure, reduce insomnia and help ease arthritis.
One thing many love about yoga is that you don't need to be fit and supple to start practising! You can start it at any age, and indeed, many people start after retirement. But it's not just a physical exercise - it is just as important for our mental health and well-being.
Have you tried yoga before? I haven't, but my daughter Becky goes to yoga classes and has suggested some exercises and links we have a look at for anyone who wants to try. Don't push yourself or do what you cannot do comfortably. You should never be in pain, but might feel a stretch in some muscles. You can always modify a stretch to make it easier and more comfortable for you.
Oh Rhian thank you for making me laugh. This is not the body for yoga. Certainly not the body for the outfit.
