I don't know about you but I get quite excited about Fridays these days and do so enjoy Philip and Sheila's trips out and about. Today we are off, still in the North East, to the town of Jarrow or known by locals as "Jarra," and Wearmouth.
It is also famous for Bede who lived and died at the Monastery of St Paul, and is now buried in Durham Cathedral. It is also famous for being developed into a major industrial centre with saltpans in operation between Jarrow Slake and South Shields throughout the 19th century, glass and chemical works, and coal mining, notably at Jarrow Colliery between 1803-1805. It was from Jarrow that the famous Jarrow march took place where the workers marched to London in the 1930's.
Welcome again to Sheila and Philip.
Alas I couldn't find any open gardens in the area on virtual visits so I will select something else afterwards. There is one though from the local hospice which is live from Saturday!
There is an interesting site at Jarrow Hall which encompasses lots to do with Bede and a Saxon farm. There is however no virtual tour, sadly.
Enjoy a lively song now!
Hope you enjoy!
What a lovely way to start the day to be 'up North' with Phillip and Sheila! Its nearly as good as being there ourselves. Very touching blog this morning the history and strength of the North and the beauty that surrounds them. X
