Travels in the South Mainland, Shetland with Philip and Sheila Morris

We did have a good time last week with Sheila and Philip and are keen to travel again with you. So off we go!

Philip says:

In this video we explore the southern part of what is known as Shetland Mainland. It has a wealth of archaeological sites, including the famous Jarshof dating back 4000 years, and Old Scatness, an Iron Age village next to Shetland's airport runway. We also visit St Ninian's Isle, crossed by a 'tombola', which has a tiny Celtic chapel in which was discovered a hoard of silver bowls and ornaments. We end with two poems by a Welsh poet, Sheenagh Pugh, who is now living in Shetland.

It all sounds exciting and we shall enjoy it, I am sure. Thank you again both of you, for all these "days out" we have been allowed to join through the blog. Someone told me a few weeks ago that the travelling days are the days she most enjoyed on the blog and that feeling to get out, explore and escape even from our living rooms for a while was something welcomed and so wanted each week.

I enjoyed the poetry too and thank you for sharing it.

What are they doing to protect these wonderful ancient ruins from erosion these days, as there didn't appear to be any sign of anything? It would be such a shame if they could not preserved for posterity. Thank you for such a powerful introduction to the Shetlands and certain it has made me wish to explore this area.
