Thursday Thoughts...

It's funny how the weather plays such a huge part in our lives. We Brits if stuck for a topic of conversation resort to the weather. I have to say I do enjoy a blustery walk with Maude in the lanes or the park or down to the sea to watch and listen to grey waves crashing on the shore.

Our cat Merlin goes mad on a windy day - running around the house making growling noises - very entertaining!

Reading Penny's musings earlier this week prompted me to look out my copy of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady (1906) which is full of wonderful observations about the seasons and what each one brings in the way of foliage and bird life.

Edith Holden, the creator of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, was born on 26th September 1871. She was a Midlands girl and grew up in Olton, Solihull. Edith was one of seven children (5 girls and 2 boys) of Arthur and Emma Holden. Following publication of the book, Edith had some of her paintings shown at an Exhibition for the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 1907 and by the Royal Academy of Arts in 1907 and 1917.

Yes I love her drawings. She is so talented. I believe we should make the most of the weather even if it's raining. I took some photos of flowers once when it was raining and the flowers looked beautiful in the rain with little drops hanging off them reflecting the light

I remember this book well but I seem to have mislaid it in the move, one of her relatives republished it in the 80's and it was a great favourite. Lots of lovely sketches of the seasons. Keith has done a beautiful video of local Autumnal scenes with vocal background and it is very soothing. X
