+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN
Our opening Hymn is: Let all the world in every corner sing
Heavenly Father, all hearts are open to you.
No secrets are hidden from you.
Purify us with the fire of your Holy Spirit
that we may love and worship you faithfully,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Lord have mercy.
Heavenly Father,
we have sinned in thought, word and deed,
and have failed to do
what we ought to have done.
We are sorry and truly repent.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ
who died for us, forgive us all that is past,
and lead us in his way
to walk as children of light. AMEN
May God our Father,
who by the Lord Jesus Christ
has reconciled the world to himself
and forgives the sins of all who truly repent,
pardon and deliver us from all our sins,
and grant us the grace and power of the Holy Spirit. AMEN
The Gloria
Collect for the fourth Sunday after Trinity
O God, the protector of all who trust in you,
without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:
increase and multiply upon us your mercy;
that with you as our ruler and guide
we may so pass through things temporal
that we finally lose not the things eternal;
grant this, heavenly Father,
for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. AMEN
Word of God
Psalm 30
I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up, and did not let my foes rejoice over me. 2 O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. 3 O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit.[a]
4 Sing praises to the Lord, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. 5 For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning.
6 As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.” 7 By your favor, O Lord, you had established me as a strong mountain; you hid your face; I was dismayed.
8 To you, O Lord, I cried, and to the Lord I made supplication: 9 “What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the Pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it tell of your faithfulness? 10 Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me! O Lord, be my helper!”
11 You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, 12 so that my soul[b] may praise you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever.
The Gospel of Christ according to St Mark
Glory to you. O Lord.
Mark 5:21–43 21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boatf to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. 22 Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet 23 and begged him repeatedly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.” 24 So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. 25 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. 26 She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 for she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.” 29 Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 He looked all around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” 35 While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?” 36 But overhearingg what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. 38 When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha cum,” which means, “Little girl, get up!” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. 43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
This is the Gospel of the Lord
Praise to you, O Christ.
Homily.
These are two are the most well known of Jesus’ miracles and we were taught them in school, church and heard many a homily about them over the years. They are examples of faith, both in the woman with haemorrhages who knew Jesus had the power to heal her, just by touching his garment, but the disciples who didn’t believe. Also, of course Jairus’ young daughter who was restored to full health – again an example of faith.
Are you are a laugher? Do you frequently burst into laughter or have a fit of the giggles? Do you manage to see the funny in many things or cringe as you struggle to keep the chuckles internal, in an embarrassing incident? It is good to have a keen sense of humour and have an ability to lighten the atmosphere, but sometimes it can get you into trouble!
We often look at others and they make us laugh and smile because they have done something amusing. A Mrs Malaprop can have us in giggles and I recall an elderly lady referring to Stirling Moss used to call him Starling Moss and the lady who called the Indian delicacies not Popadums but pompadoms and the guacamole as guatamala! It can make us chuckle. What about when we get things wrong? We laugh at our disasters but how different it can be too when the circumstances of something are different. I know Rick won’t mind me sharing, how terrible he felt when he messed up swinging the thurabul and then the tolling of the bell in his first few days in the MA. For him it challenged his thinking and actions quite seriously, and for the rest of us we laughed as it was nothing serious at all and broke the ice really. But how do you feel when you do something special perhaps for the first time and it goes wrong and everyone around you laughs? These video clips that are often on the tv making people laugh at the expense of others. How did Our Lord feel when we hear in the Gospel reading that the people laughed at him? He had just asked them why they were so upset and crying and that the young child was asleep and not dead and the reaction was one of laughter. They did not believe in Christ powers, his authority. They didn’t understand what seemed so obvious to them, so they laughed. It covered their embarrassment and their lack of faith.
Here in St Mark, Jesus is in demand and we do not know if these events happened as recorded or placed together deliberately by the actions of St Mark. We do know that Peter, James and John went with Jesus to Jairus’ home to see the child. When they arrived there was a hullaballoo outside with family crying and possibly also professional mourners had also gathered, as they would when someone had died of certain standing. It isn’t clear to whom exactly Jesus said that the child was just sleeping and then who laughed. Could it have been Peter, James and John or was it the people gathered in and out of the house, which seems more likely. He put everyone outside maybe feeling cross that they did not have faith and simply took the child’s parents in. We do not know if the disciples went in also. The child was cured, healed and the parents strictly told not to tell anyone.
We today look at this description and know it is quite possible the child was unconscious, after all a nasty temperature and infection can cause fits and coma like symptoms, equally with medical care not as advanced, it can be easy to overlook such symptoms for death. What matters here, is that the child certainly appears to have died if not actually so. She gets up when Jesus in Aramaic says “Little girl, get up!” or as it is literally translated “Lamb, get up!”Jesus is keen then that the child should have something to eat, which proves again she is alive!
The woman with the haemorrhages had faith but there is no secret about her healing, although she is made well by her faith. The case with Jairus’ daughter is that she too is made well but secretly and no-one must know. But Jairius and his wife also believe, that Jesus can help their daughter still.
We have faith be it great or little. Faith that might make us react with laughter and embarrassment or feelings, why me or the desire to share it with others. We never know what life will throw at us but, we can cope with whatever if we have the faith, if we believe in Christ and not be afraid to journey with him.
Prayers of Intercession and Lord's Prayer
Everlasting God we are gathered together in love and fellowship, hear us now as we bring before you our cares and our needs.
We pray for your church throughout the world, for Christians everywhere meeting in small house groups, in rural and town churches and in great city cathedrals. May we, your people be built up in our faith and show in our lives, the love we see in Jesus.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer
Holy God, we pray for Christians working in places of power and influence who make decisions which affect the lives of so many people. We ask you to bless those who work in politics, in the media, in advertising and in the financial markets. May they all know what to say and how to act for the benefit of all people and at all times to be true and faithful to you.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer
Father God we pray for those whom we love, family and friends who are the special people in our lives wherever they may be. We pray for their hopes, their fears, their problems and their needs but most of all we thank you for each one of them and for what they give and mean to us.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer
Merciful God, today's gospel showed the tremendous faith of a sick woman. Help us to learn from this “that we should always pray and not give up” and that if we “ask it will be given to us.” We raise before you now all those who we know who need to touch the hem of Jesus garments and receive health and healing in their lives
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer
Merciful God, into your caring hands we commit those who have died . For those who have an anniversary of death at this time - May they rest in peace and rise in glory. We pray for all those who are mourning the loss of a loved one, that they may know your strength to surround them and your love to embrace them and your gift of peace with them.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer
Gracious God, we have laid before you our concerns and now we offer you our thanks and praise for all the blessings and gifts you lavish on us. In the weeks ahead help us to keep the faith as deeply and passionately as Jairus and the woman with haemorrhages,
Merciful Father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. AMEN
Our concluding hymn is:When in our music God is glorified
The Lord be with you
And also with you.
The Grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all now and ever more. AMEN
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
