Musings with Rick

Electricity, simply put, is the flow of electric current along a conductor. This electric current takes the form of free electrons that transfer from one atom to the next. Thus, the more free electrons a material has, the better it conducts. There are three primary electrical parameters: the volt, the ampere and the ohm.

Let’s stop there, before you wonder is this our church community blog or a science lesson! The point is not many of us are electrical experts, for the past 35 years prior to starting my full-time training for Ordination I was an Aircraft Engineer who specialised in electrical systems and yes I know my Volts from my Amperes from my Ohms and I understood the theory of how it all worked all the way down to the electrons flowing, however, there was and still is a mystery in the miracle of how it worked ! It crosses my mind every time I switch on a light and seemingly instantaneously the room is filled with bright light and even more so when I think of the mini computers we hold in our hands now and how we call them just phones! Over the past few months since the pandemic came our way even more so, we have come to rely on technology like “Zoom” to allow us to keep in touch and lets not even think about the technology that allows a signals of image and sound to instantaneously be sent from one corner of the world to another sometimes via satellites orbiting our planet! Oh, how we take these mysteries for granted maybe?

But there is a bigger miracle that has been happening since the dawn of time.

Of course at this time of the year I am thinking about new life and creation especially at this time of year when we look to celebrate Harvest and our reaping of natures success in giving new life that has been nurtured and grown over the past year into the plants that will provide us with our food in the coming year. It is good at this time of year to just think about the miracle that happens all around us, we may know about how seeds germinate and what plants need to grow but there is still a mystery involved and a feeling of awe in the wonders that happen all around us every day.

As we approach Harvest time lets take a moment today to think about the mysteries of technology that will enable us to keep in touch during this Pandemic and the wonders of creation that will feed us in the following year.

Remembering to Thank God for both in our Prayers today.
