Love, always

A few weeks ago I introduced you to a book I received for my 60th birthday. It is called "The boy, the mole, the fox and the Horse" by Charlie Mackesy. Now some folk have told me they have the book and others have read it, but an extract I looked at today made me think that it would be good for the blog.

The boy speaking with the mole says,

" Sometimes I worry you'll all realise I'm ordinary," said the boy.

"Love doesn't need you to be extraordinary." said the mole.

There is a lot of truth here I think. We need to be ourselves, just as we are, warts and all, but prepared to share love around. Sharing with someone recently, she told me she tries to share the love that she sees in God amongst her friends, family and others. Love is a characteristic of the Christian it is also something which others can see, experience and respond to - and is something instinctive often. The love which is seen in God in Christ is a love for us to share and embrace, an opening of ourselves and a response to the love which we first knew. It is about sharing it about giving it to others and not about keeping it to oneself.

We are all ordinary! Nothing special about the majority of us, though sometimes we see something which sets alight, something in us. Mother Catherine from Ty Mawr Convent, radiates this quality of love, divine love in and through her many works. When I first knew her she was also shining out in the community, radiating the love of Christ, though many years before being in her habit. We all see those who are special and show us love doesn't have to be special or extraordinary, the thoughtful contact, the sharing of something, the support when it is needed and the quiet prayers when in need.

"Love one another; as I have loved you". ... John 15:12:

"Let there be love shared among us,

Let there be love in our eyes;

May now Your love sweep this nation,

Cause us, O Lord, to arise.

Give us a fresh understanding

Of 'neighbourly' love that is real;

Let there be love shared among us,

Let there be love."
