I was watching a scene unfolding outside my kitchen window and realised what I was watching was a display of pure joy.About twenty young heifers had been released into the field.They had been kept in a barn for months and they were having their first taste of freedom,they kicked up their heels and jumped for joy.Finding their feet they then galloped around bucking and careering tails in the air.After a while they settled down to grazing but then one would start off gain and all the rest would follow,
It’s a similar sight to lambs skipping in the sunshine, playing I’m the king of the castle.
But what about us; what brings us joy?
This week Prince Charles chose a poem written by Gerard Manley Hopkins called ‘Gods Grandeur’
‘The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.
And for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.’
Joy is perhaps a rare emotion in these times but we can find it if we remain open. We can see it in nature, especially in this burgeoning springtime, we can also find it in very small things like a smile. Look out for it and see how you get on.
The answer to the mystery on Saturday is :-Chris is guilty.
At least one of the three of them did it. If it was Evan, then Chris is guilty too, since Evan won't work without Chris. If it was Jimmy, then he had to be working with someone else, because he can't drive, being blind. If he was working with Chris, then Chris is guilty, if he was working with Evan, then Chris must have been involved too since Evan won't work without him, so all three would be guilty. If neither Evan nor Jimmy were involved, then Chris would be the only one who could've done it. So no matter what, Chris is guilty.
Who had worked it out? Do let me know?
First came across this poem in a book called Haphazard by starlight - a poem a day from Advent to Epiphany and it was chosen for January 6th - Janet Morley concludes that deep down the world remains still fresh and radiant with the unquenchable glory of God made manifest to those with eyes to see. X
