Friyay!

This week I have been thinking about how many people on their own, whether in isolation or not, might have a pet. These pets are a source of comfort and joy and in these days when the sense of touch is certainly out, but you can still hug your cat, dog or whatever, they can be invaluable for that feel good factor. I watched a programme last weekend about the pangolin, one of the creatures it is suggested might be responsible for the crossing from animals to human with Covid-19. I think they are quite appealing in their odd sort of way and in this documentary the conservationist had a foster one, who she did hug and cuddle!

I thought today we could look and enjoy some animal photos and songs. I am indebted to Diane for this jaunty little number which I am sure will make foot tap and make you smile!

We do have an amazing planet with so many animals upon it and we know so little about them really. We know also that animals are far more intelligent than we ever give them credit for. We know too that it is totally possible to have an intense relationship with them at times and that they often can be our saving grace . Think how animals can be trained to be therapy pets, sniffing out certain cancers, recognising the onset of seizures and leading the way to safety. Guiding the blind, autistic, visiting the elderly in hospitals and homes deaf etc as therapy pets.

How often have we heard about animals leading people out of fires and collapses:

Sometimes animals, even wild animals, sense something isn't quite right and can sometimes intervene. My father after my mother died nineteen years ago, discovered in his solitude and periods of upset, that he was being visited by a garden Robin, who came into his home and went around the house with him. He could never touch the Robin, but for months it spent part of many-a-day alongside him. I would never have believed it, but witnessed this little bird for ourselves. Dad had to be so careful as the bird would come in through open doors and windows and could then leave "his calling card!" My father never thought much about his little companion but that it was rather nice. The Robin after some months slowly reverted back to the garden.

Of course we can call it sentimental but I do think there is an important relationship and am greatly enriched by the presence of animals, birds etc in our world. We can and should share what has given to us all graciously and from that action we can all benefit too. Humanity is greedy and wants everything which involves other creatures in suffering for our selfish purposes. Maybe we will learn through the troubles of this pandemic to treat all of life respectfully. They are a part of creation as we are and if we embrace this notion perhaps we can bring about change.

This prayer for animals was written by Albert Schweitzer

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to sleep.

We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words.

Make us be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the merciful. AMEN

As it is Friday, don't forget QUIZ time! (New quiz and answers posted from about 6:00 p.m) Last week's was a stinker! Check your answers and tell me how you got on. Judy and Sid have up to now headed our results board, but after this week there is still everything to play for!

I was greatly encouraged by your thought for the day, too little attention is paid to the wild life around us. I have heard of the robin before , when he is around in the garden or near to you, it is said that some one close to you is watching over you. The last few weeks in the garden I have had a female blackbird around me where ever I am in the garden.

Where does the squirrel with the fiddle live. He is adorable. Thank you once again for brightening our day.
